The Importance of the Black Church in the Black Community: Unified Praise!
A Gospel Gathering
The event will begin with a panel discussion, The Importance of the Black Church in the Black Community, at the Paul and Jan Meyer Christian Studies Center, Manning Chapel.
The panel will be preceded by an oration featuring Dr. David Holcomb, professor in the Department of History and Political Science.
Dr. Holcomb’s academic specialty is church-state relations. His publications include the book Guardian of the Wall: Leo Pfeffer and the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment as well as articles that have appeared in the Journal of Law and Religion, Journal of Church and State, Church-State Issues in America Today, Encyclopedia of American Religion and Politics, Baptist History and Heritage, and the Journal of Texas Baptist History.
We will move across the street to the Sue and Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center for, A Night of Worship, emphasizing the Word of God conveyed through dramatic narratives, expressed in dance, and surrounded by inspiring worship and praise focusing on gospel music.
Students: This serves as an FAE and all UMHB students may attend free of charge. Simply present your student ID at the door. Your ID will be scanned at the end of the event for credit.

Dr. David Holcomb
UMHB Professor of History and Political Science
Dr. David Holcomb, a history and political science professor since 2002, teaches introductory and upper-level courses in history, religion, politics, constitutional law, and political theory. He also coordinates the London Studies Program.
Specializing in church-state relations, Dr. Holcomb’s publications include “Guardian of the Wall” and articles in various journals. He is an avid reader of Larson and Grisham, and he enjoys tennis and church choir singing.
Dr. Holcomb is married to Dr. Carol Crawford Holcomb, they have three sons.
Subjects taught: US National Government, Constitutional Law, Political Theory, Religion and Politics in the US.
Degrees earned: B.A., William Jewell College; M.A., Ph.D., Baylor University.
Pastor Tyrone Holcomb
Co-Pastor, Christian House of Prayer
Pastor Tyrone D. Holcomb, a decorated veteran with Kuwait Liberation & Southwest Asia Medals, holds degrees from Central Texas College, Texas A&M University, and the Minnesota Graduate School of Theology. He serves as co-pastor of the Cathedral of Central Texas under Senior Pastor Valarie Holcomb.
A prolific author, he’s written four practical marriage books: “Marriage Matters Volumes 1 & 2,” “Marriage Medicine,” and “Marriage Maintenance.” His itinerant ministry has taken him across the US and internationally.
Pastor Holcomb’s greatest decision was accepting Christ in 1986. His greatest accomplishment, marrying the love of his life and best friend, Andrea, and the two of them creating an amazing family, comprising four children, four grandchildren, and two spoiled dogs.

Ladies Lecture Series with Tonee Shelton
Ms. Tonee Shelton is a poet and author who's prolific writing is an inspiration across area of business, community engagement, Black and African American Culture, and now her newest project, a children's book.
We welcome Ms. Shelton to campus on March 4, 2025, for a day of celebration as we honor women and their contributions to our national and international communities.

Jesus
An American Sign Language Presentation
This feature film offered to the UMHB and Central Texas community is the result of a partnership with UMHB Alum, Mr. Zechariah Baker and OKD. Mr. Baker is the owner of the Beltonian Theatre in Belton, and he is offering the Jesus Movie ahead of our Easter Pageant to demonstrate the amazing gift of God for the redemption of His treasured creation~ mankind. This film is presented entirely in American Sign Language and will bring awareness to the unique communication style of the deaf community.
Dr. Parker Kennedy, ASL Advisor, is also offering a workshop on March 4, 2025, at 4:00 PM, in BZrindley Auditorium, for the UMHB campus community to learn common signs and recognize some of these signs when experiencing the Jesus Movie. Come and be a part of this amazing event celebrating our deaf community!
